The New England Patriots opted for a lighter practice on their 13th training camp session, as they shifted their focus to preparation for a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. The team decided to ditch the pads and decrease the intensity, giving some key players an opportunity to rest and recover.

During Monday's practice, there were a few players who were limited or did not participate. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton and long snapper Joe Cardona were limited, while LB/S Marte Mapu, cornerback Marcus Jones, cornerback Jonathan Jones, and cornerback Shaun Wade were non-participants. Notably, tight end Hunter Henry, who left practice early on Sunday, was absent from Monday's session. Additionally, Shaun Wade, who had been wearing a non-contact jersey earlier in the summer, joined the list of non-participants.

One standout performer on the offensive side was wide receiver Pop Douglas. He continued to showcase his skills and make a noticeable difference in the Patriots' passing attack. After leading the team in receptions on Sunday, Douglas once again stood out with five receptions in team periods on Monday. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett praised Douglas for his playmaking abilities and expressed excitement about having him back on the field.

While the workload for all quarterbacks was reduced in preparation for the joint practice, rookie Drake Maye had another positive day. He completed 5 out of 8 passes in 11-on-11 drills, with his three incompletions resulting from a throwaway and two pass breakups. Maye particularly shined in red zone 7-on-7 drills, throwing back-to-back touchdown passes to Javon Baker and Jaheim Bell. He concluded his day with a well-executed rollout pass to Ja'Lynn Polk for a score in 11-on-11s.

However, veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett struggled with his accuracy on Monday. He had four inaccurate throws and two completions that required adjustments from his receivers. Nevertheless, Brissett's final pass of the day was a well-placed crosser to Jalen Reagor in the back right of the end zone.

In terms of the defense, the team focused on situational work throughout the practice, primarily emphasizing red zone and goal line scenarios. While it was a non-padded practice, the defense remained dominant, limiting the offense's success in the running game and tallying several pass breakups. Players such as Christian Gonzalez, Joe Giles-Harris, Azizi Hearn, Mikey Victor, and Jahlani Tavai all contributed with their defensive plays.

Penalties were a point of concern for both the offense and the defense during the practice. The defense had to do penalty laps due to substitution and pre-snap errors, while there were also flags thrown in the secondary, including a defensive pass interference call on Alex Austin. On the offensive side, there were two false start penalties, one of which was committed by rookie guard Layden Robinson.

With Hunter Henry absent, Austin Hooper took on the role of the top tight end, while Mitchell Wilcox provided support as the backup. In the secondary, with Shaun Wade and the Joneses sidelined, Alex Austin and Marco Wilson split time on the outside cornerback positions, receiving praise from defensive coordinator Demarcus Covington. In the slot, Isaiah Bolden stepped in for Wade, with Azizi Hearn providing backup.

The offensive line remained intact, with Vederian Lowe at left tackle and Chuks Okorafor at right tackle. Rookie Caedan Wallace received reps with the second unit on the right side.

The Patriots' 13th training camp practice concluded with limited participation from Tyquan Thornton, who caught a touchdown pass during 7-on-7 drills, and David Wallis muffing a punt.

With the joint practice against the Eagles on the horizon, Tuesday promises to be one of the most significant days of the summer for the Patriots. The session will begin at 10:30 a.m., with gates opening an hour before.
