In a move that showcased their commitment to finding a reliable solution at the quarterback position, the New England Patriots selected their second quarterback of the 2024 NFL Draft. On Saturday, the Patriots used a sixth-round pick (No. 193) to secure Joe Milton III, a talented signal-caller from the University of Tennessee.

Milton, known for his rocket arm, impressed scouts with his ability to launch majestic, high-arcing passes during his time with the Volunteers. Although he didn't achieve the same level of success as his predecessor Hendon Hooker, who threw for over 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2022, Milton still showcased his potential. In the 2023 season, he completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,813 yards and 20 touchdowns.

One particular highlight from Milton's college career was his stellar first-half performance against Alabama in a late-October game. He threw two touchdowns, helping the Volunteers secure a 20-7 lead before eventually falling to the Crimson Tide. Ultimately, Milton and his team finished the season with an 8-4 record.

During the NFL Scouting Combine, Milton impressed scouts with his arm strength, leaving an impression on the Patriots. This prompted comparisons to the 2012 draft when the Washington Football Team selected Robert Griffin III second overall and also took Kirk Cousins with the 102nd pick.

However, Milton's role in New England will likely be that of a backup quarterback, firmly entrenched behind the Patriots' first-round pick, Drake Maye from the University of North Carolina. The Patriots turned down trade offers to select Maye, emphasizing their confidence in the young quarterback.

The Patriots' decision to add Milton is a strategic move to strengthen their quarterback depth, recognizing the importance of the position in the sport. Following the departure of Tom Brady, the team has struggled to find a reliable solution. By selecting both Maye and Milton, the Patriots are doubling down on their commitment to addressing this issue.

Time will tell how these young quarterbacks will fare in the NFL, but the Patriots are certainly taking proactive steps to ensure a bright future for their team. With their latest addition of Joe Milton III, they have bolstered their quarterback arsenal in the hopes of finding their next franchise leader.
