### Suspected Arson Attacks on Properties Linked to Prime Minister Denounced as Attack on Democracy
The recent arson attacks on properties associated with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have sparked outrage and been condemned as assaults on democratic values. In a statement to MPs, Sir Keir has characterized these actions as attacks not just on him, but on democracy itself. His sentiments were echoed by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch during the weekly Prime Minister's Questions, where she declared the incidents "completely unacceptable."
The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating fires at multiple north London properties and a car linked to Sir Keir. These incidents have prompted police to arrest a 21-year-old man on suspicion of arson with the intent to endanger life. The suspect, apprehended early Tuesday in Sydenham, south-east London, remains in custody after Westminster Magistrates' Court granted an extra 36 hours for questioning. This extension means investigators can hold the suspect until Friday morning.
Counter-terrorism officers are vigorously working to determine the cause and motive behind these suspicious fires, according to Scotland Yard. The investigation is being led by Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism command, who has acknowledged the potential anxiety these events may cause among MPs. He has urged any MPs concerned about their safety to contact Operation Bridger, the unit dedicated to their protection.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his gratitude to Kemi Badenoch for her swift support following the attacks. During his first public comments since the incidents, he emphasized that these attacks affect everyone and threaten the core democratic values upheld by the nation. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey also extended his support to Sir Keir and his family, commending the emergency services for their response.
The initial fire occurred early Monday at Sir Keir's private residence in Kentish Town, a property he still owns although it has been rented out since he moved to Downing Street before the 2024 general election. Prior to this, on Sunday, firefighters were called to a blaze at a house in Islington, which Sir Keir is thought to have lived in during the 1990s. Additionally, police are investigating a car fire that took place last Thursday on the same street as the Kentish Town home, involving a vehicle formerly owned by Sir Keir.
The investigation continues as counter-terrorism police treat the case with utmost seriousness, dedicated to uncovering the reasons behind these dangerous acts and ensuring the safety of all involved.
