In the latest rankings released by SafeWise, Orange County cities have made a significant presence among the top 20 safest cities in Southern California. San Clemente, Murrieta, Fontana, and Menifee from the Inland Empire also made the list, which was based on the most recent FBI data on violent crime, property crime, gun violence, and package theft.

SafeWise's ranking aims to provide valuable information regarding city safety but has drawn criticism from the FBI. The agency discourages ranking safety solely based on crime data, stressing the importance of considering law enforcement effectiveness within a city.

However, Orange County's prominence on this list follows a recent billboard advertising campaign aimed at deterring criminals from operating in the region. Entitled "Crime doesn't pay in Orange County," the campaign aims to send a clear message to potential wrongdoers throughout Southern California.

Last month, the Orange County District Attorney's Office launched this campaign, strategically placing billboards, bumper stickers, and bus signs in various locations outside of Orange County. The goal is to dissuade criminals from traveling to Orange County and committing crimes, emphasizing the strict approach to prosecution within the county's jurisdiction.

District Attorney Todd Spitzer reiterated the county's stance on crime, stating, "I want thieves to understand this is not Los Angeles County. We still prosecute in Orange County, and just because LA is lenient on people who steal, if you come to Orange County, we're going to prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law."

While the rankings provide valuable information for residents and potential visitors, it is essential to consider various factors contributing to city safety. Law enforcement effectiveness, community engagement, and crime prevention initiatives play a significant role in ensuring a safe environment for all.

As Orange County continues its efforts to maintain a secure community, the campaign's message serves as a reminder to potential wrongdoers that crime will not go unpunished within the county's jurisdiction.
