**Thunder's Hartenstein Out Indefinitely with Hand Fracture**

In a setback for the Oklahoma City Thunder, one of their newest recruits, Isaiah Hartenstein, has sustained a small, non-displaced fracture in his left hand. The team announced this development on Thursday, noting that the 26-year-old player will be re-evaluated in five to six weeks. Hartenstein suffered the injury during the second half of an exhibition game against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday.

Hartenstein, who signed a lucrative three-year, $87 million contract with the Thunder this past summer, was expected to bolster the team’s defense and size. His addition was part of the Thunder's strategy to improve their chances in the 2024 playoffs. Having previously been a standout defender and rebounder for the New York Knicks, Hartenstein's presence on the court will be missed as the team navigates the early season without him.

The injury means that Hartenstein will be sidelined at least until the end of November. Should he only be re-evaluated in five weeks, he would miss approximately 16 regular-season games. If six weeks pass before his re-evaluation, the count would rise to 18 games. The Thunder clarified that "re-evaluated" does not necessarily indicate his return to play but rather that further updates will be provided around that time.

During the preseason, Hartenstein showcased his versatility, playing alongside fellow big man Chet Holmgren and contributing to the team's jumbo lineups. Despite his defensive prowess, Hartenstein also demonstrated his value on offense, acting as a facilitator in the second unit with his adept passing skills.

The Thunder have high aspirations for the season, having transformed into the youngest team ever to secure a No. 1 seed in the 2023-24 season. Returning most of their youthful core, along with new additions like defensive stalwart Alex Caruso, the team hoped that Hartenstein would play a crucial role. Last season with the Knicks, Hartenstein averaged 7.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game.

With Hartenstein's temporary absence, Oklahoma City will need to make adjustments to maintain their competitive edge as they aim for another deep playoff run.
