In a dominating performance, the Ohio State Buckeyes secured a 49-14 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd at Ohio Stadium yesterday afternoon. Despite a slow start trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, Ohio State exploded with 28 unanswered points by halftime and carried the momentum through the second half with another 21 points to seal the win. The victory improved Ohio State's record to a perfect 3-0 for the season as they eye their upcoming Big Ten conference play.
The Buckeyes showcased a potent offensive display, amassing a total of 569 yards, including a remarkable ground game that saw running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson shine. Judkins displayed his explosiveness with 173 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including an impressive 86-yard dash to the end zone. Henderson contributed 76 yards and a touchdown of his own, averaging an impressive 12.4 yards per carry. The offensive line, anchored by left guard Donovan Jackson, created ample running lanes, resulting in chunk plays of 11, 14, 16, 17, 29, 40, and 86 yards.
Quarterback Will Howard orchestrated the passing game efficiently, connecting with his top receiving targets Emeka Egbuka, Carnell Tate, and Jeremiah Smith for a combined 251 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Egbuka led the receiving corps with 117 yards and a 68-yard touchdown, showcasing his big-play ability. Despite a solid performance, there were concerns over the special teams' struggles, particularly with three out-of-bounds kickoffs by Jayden Fielding and some miscues in punt return coverage.
Defensively, the Buckeyes faced a challenging first half but regrouped after halftime to limit Marshall to only 61 yards in the second half, shutting them out completely. Safety Lathan Ransom and linebacker Sonny Styles made key contributions, while Cody Simon faced challenges in pass coverage. With the victory over Marshall, Ohio State looks ahead to their highly anticipated matchup against Michigan State, aiming to continue their winning streak as they enter Big Ten competition.
