In a shocking turn of events, an 81-year-old Ohio man has been charged with murder after allegedly gunning down an Uber driver at his home. William Brock is accused of fatally shooting 61-year-old Loletha Hall when she arrived to pick up a package at his residence on March 25, 2024.

The incident unfolded when Mr. Brock fell victim to a phone scam, where unknown callers claimed that one of his relatives was being held in Clark County Jail. Manipulating the elderly man, the scammers demanded a significant amount of cash for bail. Despite their threats towards Mr. Brock and his family, he was hesitant to comply with their instructions.

Unaware that Hall was also a victim of the scam, Mr. Brock confronted her with a pistol upon her arrival and demanded to know who had sent her. Desperate to prevent her from making further calls, he confiscated her phone and refused to let her leave the premises.

Authorities believe that Hall had been contacted by the same scammers or their accomplices through the Uber app, instructing her to pick up the package. However, she did not pose any threats to Mr. Brock and was inquiring solely about the package.

As Hall attempted to escape into her car, Mr. Brock pursued her and allegedly shot her multiple times. A scuffle ensued at the car door before Mr. Brock fired another shot at the driver. Shockingly, the entire incident was caught on Hall's dashcam.

After the shooting, Mr. Brock retreated into his home, secured his firearm, and immediately contacted the police, who subsequently arrived at the scene. The elderly man sustained injuries to his ear and head during the altercation and was bleeding profusely.

On Monday, Mr. Brock was indicted on charges of murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping by a grand jury. It remains uncertain whether he has entered a plea for the additional charges. Although a defendant with the same name is currently in custody, it has not been confirmed if it is the same individual. Mr. Brock had previously posted a $200,000 bond for a single murder charge and was released from jail.

Lieutenant Kristopher E Shultz, a Clark County Sheriff's Office detective, stated that additional charges are likely to be filed as the investigation progresses. The sheriff's office is actively working to locate the person who made the initial scam call.

Following the tragic incident, Uber expressed its condolences to Hall's family and assured that they had banned the account responsible for requesting the pick-up of the package. The company is fully cooperating with law enforcement and is committed to supporting the ongoing investigation.

As the case develops, the community awaits justice for the senseless killing of Loletha Hall and the prosecution of those responsible for both the phone scam and her untimely death.
