The New York City Police Department recently made public the body camera footage of the officer-involved shooting at a Brooklyn subway station that left multiple individuals injured. The incident took place at the Sutter Avenue train station in Brownsville and involved Officers Edmund Mays and Alex Wong interacting with the suspect, 37-year-old Derrell Mickles. Mickles was observed entering the station without paying and brandishing a knife, which led to a confrontation with the officers.
The video of the encounter shows Mickles engaging in a verbal exchange with the officers before boarding a train with the weapon in hand. Despite repeated commands to drop the knife and the deployment of tasers, Mickles continued to advance towards the officers. Subsequently, the officers fired a total of nine shots, resulting in Mickles and a bystander sustaining critical injuries. Officer Mays and another bystander were also injured in the shooting.
Following the incident, Mickles was indicted on multiple charges, including attempted aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon. Despite pleading not guilty, his bail was set at $250,000, and he is currently recuperating at Kings County Hospital. The footage release prompted criticism of the officers' handling of the situation, with concerns raised by the family of a bystander injured in the shooting. Attorneys representing the injured parties have called for a full investigation into the incident and allege that proper de-escalation measures were not employed by the police.
