The New York Police Department (NYPD) has unveiled body-worn camera footage of a recent chaotic police shooting incident that occurred in a Brooklyn subway station. The video showcases the moments leading up to the altercation where 37-year-old Derell Mickles was chased by officers, brandishing a knife, and ultimately shot. The footage captured Mickles ignoring commands to drop the knife, leading to officers attempting to use a Taser before resorting to firing their guns.
The released video begins with Assistant Commissioner of Public Information Carlos Nieves reading a disclaimer, cautioning viewers about the graphic nature of the content. The footage, originating from the body cameras of Officers Alex Wong and Edmund Mays, reveals the intense confrontation that transpired on the subway platform. Mickles is seen being pursued by the officers and refusing to comply with their orders, resulting in a heated escalation that culminates in shots being fired.
Following the confrontation, Mickles was transported to the hospital and remains unable to walk due to the injuries sustained during the incident. His attorney, Jonathan Fink, addressed Mickles' condition in a video arraignment, emphasizing the severity of his injuries and questioning the level of force used by the police. Mickles has been charged with attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and fare evasion in connection with the confrontation and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The judge ordered him to be held on bail or bond.
