In preparation for Sunday's Israel Day Parade in Midtown Manhattan, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has taken strict measures to ensure the safety and security of the event. An internal police memo obtained by The Post reveals that the NYPD has ordered officers to promptly arrest any protesters who attempt to breach the police perimeter.
According to the memo, any spectator who tries to enter the restricted area between the barriers or ventures onto the parade route will be immediately arrested for trespassing, with no warnings given. The NYPD is determined to maintain order during the celebration, without infringing upon protesters' free speech rights.
However, the memo also specifies that if a spectator conveys a message that may be offensive to participants or other spectators, it is considered protected speech and cannot serve as a basis for enforcement.
The Israel Day Parade is a traditional annual event that celebrates the Jewish state. This year's march takes place amidst increased tension in New York City, fueled by a rise in antisemitic attacks and anti-Israel demonstrations since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas terrorists. In response to this deadly assault, the Israeli military launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip, resulting in casualties and displacements.
Anti-Israel protests have taken root on college campuses across the United States, including Ivy League schools like Columbia University, as well as other campuses in the five boroughs. In light of these circumstances, the NYPD has meticulously briefed its officers on security measures for the parade.
Metal detectors will be used to screen attendees, and numerous items such as backpacks, umbrellas, lawn folding chairs, blankets, coolers, and drones are prohibited along the parade route, as per the internal memo. Banners or large flags are allowed, as long as they do not obstruct the view of others. The message or meaning conveyed by the banner or flag is deemed irrelevant by the NYPD.
Palestinian flags have been frequently displayed at anti-Israeli protests, and the Hamas terror flag has been observed at several demonstrations. These incidents underscore the tense climate surrounding the parade.
With the measures in place, the NYPD aims to maintain a peaceful and secure environment for participants and spectators alike. The department is committed to upholding the rights of protesters while ensuring the safety of all those attending the Israel Day Parade.
