NPR Editor Resigns After Criticizing Employer's Liberal Views

(New York, AP) - In a surprising turn of events, Uri Berliner, a senior editor on NPR's business desk, has resigned a day after news broke of his suspension. Berliner had written an essay expressing his concerns about NPR's promotion of liberal views, which led to his suspension. The news of his resignation was confirmed when he posted his resignation letter on X, formerly known as Twitter.

NPR, however, declined to comment on the resignation. The head of public relations at the organization stated that they do not discuss individual personnel matters.

Berliner wrote in his resignation letter that while he wishes for NPR to thrive and continue its important journalism, he cannot work in a newsroom where he feels disparaged by a new CEO with divisive views. He referred to problems he had highlighted in his earlier essay.

Katherine Maher, a former tech executive, was appointed as NPR's chief executive in January. However, she has faced criticism from conservative activists for her past social media messages that disparaged former President Donald Trump. These messages were posted before she was hired by NPR.

NPR had suspended Berliner without pay for five days due to violations of their policy, which requires approval for work done with outside organizations. Berliner had written the essay for the online platform Free Press at that time.

It remains to be seen how NPR will respond to the resignation of Uri Berliner and whether any further developments will occur in regard to the organization's handling of differing viewpoints.
