In a move aimed at promoting Republican unity, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley has announced the release of the several dozen delegates she won during the primaries, urging them to support former President Donald Trump at the upcoming Republican National Convention. Haley, who served under Trump's administration, emphasized the importance of having a strong and competent leader, stating that Joe Biden is unfit for a second term and that Kamala Harris would be detrimental to the country.
According to Haley's campaign, she had gathered a total of 97 delegates during the primary process. However, due to Trump already securing the required 1,215 delegates to become the presumptive Republican nominee, Haley's release of these delegates is not expected to significantly impact the outcome of the convention. Additionally, state party rules also play a role in dictating how delegates can vote during the event.
Haley's spokesperson, Chaney Denton, confirmed that she will not be attending the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Denton stated that Haley had not been invited and expressed her support for Trump, emphasizing that he deserves the convention he desires. Haley has made it clear that she plans to vote for Trump and wishes him the best.
The news of Haley releasing her delegates was initially reported by Politico. The former governor of South Carolina suspended her campaign back in March but had refrained from endorsing Trump at the time, stressing that he needed to earn the votes of those both within and outside of the party. However, in May, Haley announced that she would be voting for Trump, despite her previous criticisms of his presidency. She clarified that her decision to support him did not contradict the concerns raised in her suspension speech.
With Haley's endorsement, Trump secures the backing of another prominent figure within the Republican Party, further solidifying his position as the party's nominee. As the Republican National Convention approaches, expectations rise as to how the event will unfold and what policies and strategies will be emphasized by the Republican Party going into the upcoming presidential election.
