In a recent development, a video has emerged showing a suspected Saudi spy, Omar al-Bayoumi, filming the US Capitol and National Monument in 1999, just months before the September 11 terrorist attacks. The footage, which was unsealed last week in federal court during the case against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has raised questions about the extent of Saudi Arabian involvement in the planning of the attacks.
The video, narrated by al-Bayoumi himself, shows him addressing his "brothers" and promising to survey the US Capitol building and the Washington Monument. "I will go over there, and I will report," he says, panning the camera to the monuments. The clip also includes references to a "plan," indicating possible involvement in selecting targets for the 9/11 attacks.
Retired FBI Agent Richard Lambert, who is now a consultant on the case filed by the families of 9/11 victims, believes that the video adds to the mounting evidence suggesting Saudi government complicity in the attacks. Lambert insists that "it is another very large brick in a massive wall of evidence that at this point indicates the Saudi government was complicit in the 9/11 attacks."
Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell, who had not previously seen the video, expressed his conviction that it is a "casing video" for a potential terrorist attack. Morell stated in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation," "No doubt in my mind that it is a casing video, that it is a casing video for some sort of terrorist attack."
However, it remains unclear if US officials have thoroughly analyzed the video. The Saudi government and al-Bayoumi have maintained that it was a mere tourist tape. Retired FBI Agent Ken Williams, who worked on the 9/11 investigation, questioned the delay in the video surfacing, considering it was provided to the US following a British raid on al-Bayoumi's UK residence in 2001.
The FBI has declined to comment on the specific video and the ongoing case, citing the ongoing litigation. It is yet to be determined if the video will have a significant impact on the lawsuit seeking to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for the 9/11 attacks.
The emergence of this footage adds a new dimension to the investigation and raises further questions regarding potential Saudi involvement in the planning of the attacks. As the case against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia unfolds, the video serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to uncover the truth behind that tragic day in American history.
