According to a recent survey conducted by The New York Times/Siena, a rematch of the 2020 election between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump is shaping up to be a close contest. The poll, released on Saturday, found that Trump only had a slight lead over Biden, with 46 percent of the respondents favoring the former president compared to Biden's 45 percent.
This poll marks a significant shift from a similar survey conducted in February, where Trump had a 5-point lead over Biden in a two-way matchup, with 48 percent support versus Biden's 43 percent. However, when third-party candidates were included, Biden's support dropped to 40 percent, while Trump's lowered to 42 percent. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. garnered 2 percent of the support, according to the poll.
The survey also revealed that Trump enjoyed more support among male voters, while Biden garnered more support from female voters. The former president's largest age group of supporters fell within the 49 to 64-year-old category, while Biden was most popular among respondents aged 65 and older.
The racial breakdown of the survey showed that nearly 70 percent of Black respondents expressed their preference for Biden, with only 16 percent supporting Trump. Among white voters, however, Trump held an advantage, with 53 percent favoring him over Biden's 39 percent.
In terms of education level, Biden received greater support from college-educated adults. About 55 percent of respondents with a bachelor's degree indicated that they would vote for the current president, compared to 39 percent in favor of Trump.
Biden also gained significant support from people of color. Fifty percent of Hispanic respondents said they would choose Biden, while almost 60 percent of non-white respondents who did not identify as Black, Hispanic, or Latino expressed their support for the current president.
Notably, the poll highlighted that Trump remained popular among independent voters, a crucial voting group that could play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the election. Trump garnered 47 percent support from independents, while Biden trailed behind with 42 percent.
The Times/Siena poll was conducted from April 7th to 11th and included 1,059 voters. With a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points, these results signify a tightening race between Biden and Trump as they gear up for a potential rematch in the fall. Both candidates will likely intensify their efforts to secure the support of undecided and wavering voters in the coming months.
