**Governor Murphy Signs Pay Transparency Law for Job Listings**

New Jersey job seekers will now have clearer insights into potential earnings, thanks to a new law signed by Governor Phil Murphy on Monday. This legislation mandates that employers with a workforce exceeding ten employees must reveal salary ranges and benefits in their job postings.

The law also obliges employers to inform current employees about promotional opportunities. New York set a precedent with similar legislation back in 2022; however, some businesses circumvented the requirements by listing excessively broad salary ranges.

Senator Paul Moriarty (D-Gloucester), one of the bill's sponsors, heralded the law as a stride towards "transparency and fairness in the job listing and hiring process." Moriarty emphasized that job seekers deserve to know how much a job pays upfront, rather than being misled through an arduous interview process only to be disappointed.

First-time violators of the law will face a $300 fine, escalating to $600 for repeat offenders. The bill received unanimous support in the Senate in late June and was approved by the Assembly with a 56-16 vote in September.

Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Union), another key proponent, stated that the law would "level the playing field" by combating favoritism and helping employees better understand their career progression opportunities from the outset.

The law will come into effect in mid-2025. This step aligns New Jersey with a broader trend, as several states including California, Nevada, Washington, Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Utah have embraced similar pay transparency measures since California first led the way in 2018.
