New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has strongly criticized former President Donald Trump for his recent remarks comparing the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor. During a campaign event in New Jersey, Trump claimed that the Presidential Medal of Freedom was a "better" award than the revered military decoration.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States Armed Forces, recognizing acts of extraordinary bravery and valor in combat. In contrast, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is bestowed upon civilians who have made significant contributions to the security and national interests of America, world peace, or other public endeavors.

Trump's comments caused immediate backlash, with Governor Sununu labeling them as "asinine." Speaking in an interview on CNN's State of the Union, Sununu acknowledged that Trump's controversial statements were nothing new, but he downplayed their potential impact on the ongoing election. He also concurred with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), who described Trump's comments as "asinine."

The Republican governor emphasized that the sacrifices made by those who protect the country through military service are unparalleled and deserve utmost respect. Sununu also advised Trump to focus on promoting the strength and security of America when discussing the military, rather than making unwarranted comparisons.

Trump's remarks received widespread criticism beyond Governor Sununu's rebuke. The VFW's national commander, Al Lipphardt, condemned the comments, asserting that they diminished the significance of the Medal of Honor and disrespected the sacrifices made by recipients. Veterans for Responsible Leadership (VFRL), a bipartisan super PAC, expressed similar sentiments, accusing Trump of prioritizing billionaire donors over military veterans.

Despite the backlash, Trump's running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, defended the former president's intentions, stating that he honors and appreciates veterans. Vance argued that Trump's complimentary words about a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom should not be seen as diminishing the achievements of those who have received military honors.

This is not the first time that Trump has faced controversy concerning his interactions with the U.S. Armed Forces. Former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who has been critical of Trump, highlighted previous instances where the former president allegedly disparaged service members and veterans. Trump has dismissed these allegations as "fake."

Governor Sununu's strong rebuke of Trump's comments highlights the division within the Republican party regarding the former president's rhetoric. As the election season progresses, it remains to be seen how such controversies will impact voters' decisions.

Newsweek has reached out to both Governor Sununu's office and Trump's campaign for comment on the matter. However, there has been no response at the time of writing.

The disparaging remarks made by Trump regarding the Medal of Freedom and the Medal of Honor add to the ongoing narrative surrounding his relationship with the military, raising questions about his respect for those who have served and sacrificed for their country.
