In a series of changes for the New England Patriots, the team is now embarking on a search for their next top football executive, according to sources cited by CBS Sports. This move comes after the team welcomed a new coach and quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season.

While the exact title of this executive position is yet to be determined, sources believe that it will outrank all other football positions within the organization. In the past, Bill Belichick held the role of the "primary football executive" in addition to being the head coach. However, following his departure in January after 24 years, the Patriots found themselves without a primary football executive.

Eliot Wolf, the team's current director of scouting, has taken charge of the personnel department since Belichick's departure and is considered a strong candidate for this new role. His performance over the past four months will play a vital role in his evaluation for the position.

Nevertheless, team owner Robert Kraft is required to comply with the NFL's Rooney Rule, which means that the Patriots must interview at least two external minority candidates in person before finalizing any hiring decision. Kraft had previously stated that he planned to stick with the team's internal staff, but did not rule out the possibility of conducting an eventual search for a top football executive.

The timing of this search comes as a surprise to many, as teams typically make changes at the top of their personnel department following the conclusion of the season. However, some teams, like the Buffalo Bills in 2017, have made changes after the draft. Kraft, who hasn't had to conduct a coaching or general manager search for the past 25 years, is now faced with this important task.

Wolf has already made notable moves for the Patriots, including signing players during free agency such as offensive lineman Mike Onwenu, tight end Hunter Henry, safety Kyle Dugger, and defensive tackle Christian Barmore. He also successfully resisted offers from the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings for the No. 3 overall pick in the recent draft, ultimately selecting Drake Maye as the team's future franchise quarterback.

As the Patriots continue to shape their team for the upcoming seasons, the appointment of a new top football executive will have a significant impact on their future. The search is now underway, and all eyes are on the organization as they navigate this crucial decision-making process.
