In a recent encounter at a campaign event featuring Vice President Kamala Harris in Nevada, a voter who criticized President Biden has come forward with allegations of censorship. Stephen Stubbs, a First Amendment attorney from Henderson, Nevada, revealed that a Biden campaign staffer attempted to shut down his interview with a New York Times reporter after he expressed concerns about Biden's mental acuity.
The incident occurred on June 28 at the East Las Vegas Community Center, where Harris was scheduled to speak. Initially attending to hear the administration's plans to address inflation, Stubbs' focus shifted after Biden's performance at the CNN Presidential Debate. He wanted to know how Harris would respond to questions regarding Biden's mental acuity, a concern reportedly shared by many attendees.
According to Stubbs, staffers wearing Biden-Harris shirts were circulating and subtly discouraging negative comments about the president during the event. Stubbs, who was sitting outside enjoying his tacos and ice cream, coincidentally ended up sitting next to the chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Nevada. She was later approached by New York Times politics fellow Simon Levien for an interview.
During their conversation, Stubbs began discussing his thoughts on the previous night's debate with Levien. However, a Biden staffer, identified as Clio Calvo-Platero, started recording the conversation with her phone, creating an intimidating atmosphere, according to Stubbs. He questioned why Biden couldn't articulate his actions as president during the ninety-minute debate and expressed concerns about who was truly running the country.
Stubbs then suggested that Biden step down and allow Vice President Harris, who was elected to the position, to fulfill the rest of his term. The Biden staffer immediately interrupted, declaring that she would put an end to the conversation, stating that it was a Biden event and criticizing Biden was unacceptable.
Despite the staffer's interference, the New York Times reporter, to his credit, resisted and continued the interview. Stubbs noted that throughout the encounter, the Biden staffer gave him hostile looks, as if silently chastising him for speaking negatively about the president to a respected media outlet like the New York Times.
Levien later confirmed the incident in a vice presidential pool report, mentioning that Calvo-Platero had also tried to cut short interviews with other critical voters, including Democratic voter Amy Nelson. However, the Biden campaign has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter from Fox News Digital.
Describing himself as a constitutionalist, Stubbs revealed that he voted third-party in the 2020 election due to dissatisfaction with both Trump and Biden. He expressed shock and discontent over the encounter with Calvo-Platero, emphasizing her authoritative approach and his concerns about the chilling effect it had on the freedom of speech.
Stubbs highlighted the significance of the incident by stating that he is currently an undecided voter heading into November's elections. He expressed his desire for a reason not to vote for Trump, mentioning specific issues he has with the former President's pro-police militarization and the sale of weapons of war to police departments. Inflation, which is greatly affecting his family and adult children, has become the most crucial issue for Stubbs in determining his vote.
As this story opens up, it raises questions about the Biden campaign's response to criticism and their handling of dissenting voices within their own events. The incident has shed light on the importance of fostering open dialogue and protecting the right to free speech in the political landscape.
