**Man Hospitalized After Neighborhood Dispute Escalates to Gun Violence**

A Minneapolis resident, Davis Maturi, is recovering in a hospital following a shooting incident that occurred outside his Grand Avenue South home on October 23. This altercation stemmed from a long-standing feud with his neighbor, John Herbert Sawchak, 54.

Minneapolis police were alerted to the situation after Maturi was discovered in the fetal position by his wife upon her return from work. Initially transported to the hospital for a medical condition that caused him to collapse, doctors later found a bullet lodged near his spine, revealing the gravity of his injuries, which also included a fractured spine, two broken ribs, and a concussion.

The criminal complaint portrays a history of escalating harassment from Sawchak toward Maturi and his family, dating back to the few weeks after they moved into their home in September 2023. These aggressive encounters reportedly began on October 11, 2023, when a disagreement over a tree at their property line turned hostile, with Sawchak using racial slurs and threats.

The harassment intensified in March 2024, when Sawchak confronted Maturi while he was working on a ladder, followed by an incident in April 2024, where Sawchak threw household items at Maturi from his second-floor window. The threats continued to escalate; on May 28, 2024, Sawchak made a racially derogatory threat, and throughout the summer and fall of 2024, he allegedly brandished a knife and a firearm while threatening Maturi and his wife.

On the evening of October 23, 2024, after collapsing from the gunshot, Maturi and his wife reviewed their home security footage, which captured the moment it all unfolded. The footage depicted Maturi working near the tree with his back to Sawchak's home when a faint "crack" or "pop" was audible before Maturi collapsed.

Despite multiple prior complaints and numerous acts of aggression, Sawchak remains at large. The Minneapolis Police Department has cited "officer safety" as their reason for not executing the warrant for Sawchak’s arrest, which includes charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, stalking, and harassment. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office had requested a warrant with $1 million bail for his arrest.

The situation has sparked criticism from members of the Minneapolis City Council, who have expressed frustration towards the police department for not taking more decisive action to protect Maturi and his family sooner. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara's response to the council’s letter criticizing the police department’s inaction is anticipated to address these concerns.
