A tense neighborhood dispute between Martha-Ann Alito, the wife of conservative Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, and her liberal former neighbor, Emily Baden, has garnered public attention. The disagreement, which revolved around anti-Trump lawn signs, escalated into a profanity-filled confrontation, witnessed by Justice Alito himself.
The saga began when Baden celebrated Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election by putting up a handmade sign in her yard, which displayed "BYE-DON" on one side and "F*** Trump" on the other. After the sign fell due to strong winds, Baden claimed that Martha-Ann Alito drove by and thanked her for removing the sign, although Baden had no intention of complying.
Following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Baden replaced the fallen sign with a new one that read "You are complicit" and "Trump Is A Fascist." Baden recalls an incident where Martha-Ann Alito stared at her and her husband from her vehicle for an uncomfortably long period, raising suspicions.
According to the New York Times, the Alitos then displayed an upside-down American flag in front of their home, which Justice Alito has claimed was a result of his wife's distress over the ongoing neighborhood dispute. The upside-down flag, historically a symbol of distress for sailors, had more recently been associated with the pro-Trump "stop the steal" movement and the Capitol riot.
On the day of Joe Biden's inauguration, Baden and her husband drove past the Alito residence out of curiosity and encountered Martha-Ann Alito, who allegedly ran out and exclaimed something that they could not hear. On a subsequent pass by the Alito home, Baden claims that Martha-Ann Alito appeared to spit at their car, leading to the couple promptly leaving the scene.
The final and most heated encounter occurred on February 15, 2021, when Baden and her husband were in their driveway retrieving trash cans. The Alitos, both Samuel Alito and Martha-Ann Alito, approached them during what seemed to be a casual walk. Martha-Ann Alito allegedly confronted them, using offensive language and referring to Baden and her family as "f****** fascists." In response, Baden expressed her shock at the behavior, questioning Martha-Ann Alito for representing the highest court in the land.
During this confrontation, Baden admitted to calling Martha-Ann Alito a derogatory term, which she now regrets. Justice Alito remained silent throughout the exchange, and the couple eventually walked away as Baden continued to voice her concerns.
Baden's husband promptly called the police to report the incident, but no further action was taken at the time. Justice Alito maintained that his wife, as a private citizen, possesses the First Amendment right to express herself independently. He emphasized his respect for her decisions and his lack of involvement in the dispute.
As the story circulates, Democrats have raised concerns about whether Justice Alito should recuse himself from cases related to Trump and the Capitol insurrection. They argue that the Alitos' involvement in a neighborhood dispute that was influenced by political sentiments compromises Justice Alito's impartiality.
Both Emily Baden and Martha-Ann Alito have shared their perspectives, and the public awaits further developments in this unexpected clash between neighbors with differing political beliefs.
