**Nebraska Voters Approve Abortion Limitation Measure**

Nebraska voters have passed a ballot measure prohibiting abortions beyond the first three months of pregnancy, according to The Associated Press. This amendment outperformed a competing proposal that aimed to protect abortion rights up to the point of fetal viability.

Nebraska was among 10 states that featured abortion-related amendments on their ballots this year, reflecting a broader trend among abortion rights advocates to bolster support in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade two years ago. Notably, Nebraska was the only state where anti-abortion activists introduced their own measure to limit abortion access.

The proposed measure from abortion rights groups, which did not pass, sought to safeguard a "fundamental right" to abortion until viability—typically around 24 weeks of pregnancy. This would have allowed the state to regulate or ban abortions past that point, except when necessary to protect the health or life of the pregnant woman.

Instead, the successful measure amends the Nebraska State Constitution to stipulate that "unborn children shall be protected from abortion in the second and third trimester," with specific exceptions allowed for cases of rape, incest, or when a medical emergency necessitates an abortion.

Supporters of the winning measure indicated that the amendment reaffirms an existing law passed by Nebraska legislators last year, which already prohibits abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy. This law includes exceptions to save the life or prevent serious physical health risks to the pregnant woman, as well as for cases of rape and incest.

While anti-abortion advocates initially sought to ban abortion from the moment of conception, they were unable to gather enough signatures to put such an amendment on the ballot. The approved measure represents a significant step in their ongoing efforts to limit abortion access within the state.
