In a recent announcement, the NBA has suspended Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley for four games without pay. The suspension comes after Beverley threw a basketball multiple times at Pacers fans during the final minutes of Milwaukee's Game 6 elimination loss to Indiana, and engaged in an "inappropriate interaction" with a reporter during media availability.
The incident took place with around two and a half minutes remaining in the game when Beverley, with the Bucks trailing by 20 points, threw a basketball from the team's bench towards a fan sitting behind him. However, instead of hitting the intended male Pacers fan, the basketball struck a female Pacers fan on the side of her head. Beverley then requested the ball back, which was tossed back to him by the male fan. In response, Beverley immediately threw the ball back at the fan, resulting in a heated exchange of words.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating the ball-throwing incident, and footage from Gainbridge Fieldhouse is being reviewed. Detectives plan to speak with those involved, and the outcome of the investigation will be presented to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, which will make a decision regarding potential charges.
According to sources familiar with the incident, it escalated when a fan behind the bench yelled, "Cancun... Cancun on 3," during a huddle break. It is reported that obscenities were also exchanged between Beverley and the fans prior to the escalation. Beverage, however, downplayed the incident by saying, "Nah, don't worry about that. Nothing."
Following the game, Beverley addressed the altercation on his X account, expressing that the exchange between the fan and the ball club was unfair and that they had requested help throughout the night. In a separate post, he acknowledged his need to improve and stated that he would strive to do better.
The incident with the fans was followed by an exchange involving Beverley and ESPN producer Malinda Adams, where he told her she couldn't ask him a question because she didn't subscribe to his podcast. Adams later confirmed that Beverley reached out and apologized for the exchange.
Bucks coach Doc Rivers addressed Beverley's actions, emphasizing that they were not reflective of the team's values. Rivers acknowledged the emotional nature of the game, but underscored that certain behaviors, like throwing objects at fans, were unacceptable.
Patrick Beverley, who joined the Bucks in February via a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, has averaged 6.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game in the regular season. Throughout the playoffs, his scoring average peaked at 13 points in a game.
With this suspension, Beverley will be sidelined for four games, leaving the Bucks to adapt without his presence on the court. The team will have to regroup and focus on their upcoming games as they strive to continue their playoff run.
