Federal officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting an investigation into a tragic natural gas explosion that resulted in the death of two individuals in Bel Air, Maryland. The explosion occurred at a residential property and claimed the lives of Ray Corkran Jr., the 73-year-old homeowner, and Jose Rodriguez-Alvarado, a contracted utility employee with Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).

According to the state fire marshal's office, the investigation is currently focused on accidental causes as there is no evidence of criminal activity. Jennifer Gabris, spokesperson for the NTSB, confirmed that their pipeline investigators were at the scene on Monday in Bel Air, located about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.

The initial response to the incident began on Sunday morning when firefighters were alerted to a gas leak and reports of the smell of gas in the area. However, before the firefighters could reach the scene, calls flooded in stating that the house had exploded.

The state fire marshal's office further informed that the deputy state fire marshals and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) have now concluded their on-scene investigation. The area has been handed over to insurance representatives for further assessment.

Efforts are already underway to clean up the debris scattered throughout the neighborhood, and restoration companies have begun repairing nearby homes affected by the explosion. Meanwhile, investigators will meticulously review all the evidence and data collected on Sunday, including gas and electrical piping, interviews, video surveillance, and data from BGE to determine the cause of the explosion.

The explosion has left a lasting impact on the community, with neighboring homes reporting various degrees of damage. Twelve families have been displaced as a result of the incident.

Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray expressed his condolences, stating, "Our hearts are broken for the two victims and their families. Our team of highly qualified investigators and our partners at ATF are dedicated to providing an answer that will lead to safer communities. A tragedy of this size is heart-wrenching for Maryland."

Over 60 first responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene of the explosion to provide assistance and support.

As the investigation continues, authorities emphasize the importance of remaining vigilant and being able to identify and respond to gas leaks in homes to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
