The endorsement comes just a day after President Biden announced that he would not seek reelection. Pelosi's backing holds great significance, as she played a crucial role in pressuring Biden to reconsider his decision to remain in the race.
Pelosi had initially withheld her support when Biden stepped down and endorsed Harris. However, on Monday, the Speaker emerita offered a full-throated endorsement of Harris for the presidency. In a statement, Pelosi expressed immense pride and boundless optimism for the future of the country and declared her endorsement for Harris.
Having led House Democrats for nearly two decades before stepping down from her top role last year, Pelosi expressed full confidence in Harris's ability to lead the party to victory in November. Pelosi highlighted Harris's strength, courage, and dedication to championing working families, particularly in fighting for women's rights.
The endorsement from Pelosi adds to the growing list of House Democrats supporting Harris's presidential campaign, which was launched immediately after Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed his vice president as his successor. Notably, Pelosi was one of a few prominent Democrats who initially refrained from endorsing Harris when Biden made his announcement. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former President Obama also praised Biden without explicitly supporting Harris.
While these three prominent Democrats have yet to endorse Harris, she did receive endorsements on Monday from Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar. These endorsements solidify Harris's growing support within the party.
Representative Jared Huffman revealed that some top Democrats may be withholding their endorsements for now to allow a process to play out, resulting in a stronger and more legitimate candidacy for Harris. Huffman expressed confidence that Harris will ultimately become the party's nominee.
Pelosi's pivotal role behind the scenes cannot be understated. She exerted pressure on Biden to reassess his decision to remain in the race after his poor debate performance last month. When the tide began to shift in Biden's favor, Pelosi's appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" further contributed to calls for him to step aside. This ultimately led to the withdrawal and subsequent endorsement of Harris.
With Pelosi's official endorsement, Harris gains a powerful ally within the Democratic Party. As the race for the presidential nomination heats up, Harris continues to gather momentum, securing endorsements from notable figures and positioning herself as a strong contender for the party's nomination.
