In the early hours of Sunday morning, a shooting incident at the Lux Apartments in downtown Madison left multiple people injured and hospitalized. The Madison Police Chief, Shon Barnes, called it a "miracle" that no fatalities were reported.
The incident unfolded when the police were called to the Lux Apartments on Johnson Street at approximately 12:45 a.m. in response to reports of a large party on the roof. As officers arrived at the scene, they were alerted to a recent shooting.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as dozens of people fled the building in panic, with some even tripping over each other in their rush to find safety. Officers discovered one teenager with multiple gunshot wounds in the street below. Additionally, several others required medical assistance.
Undeterred by the potential danger, brave Madison police officers rapidly ascended twelve flights of stairs to reach the rooftop. Inside, they found individuals in various states of distress, with some even hiding in a maintenance closet, seeking safety.
A total of ten people were injured in the incident, with none of the injuries considered life-threatening. Nine of the victims sustained gunshot wounds or grazes. Authorities revealed that the victims ranged in age from 14 to 23 years old.
While initial investigations have resulted in the recovery of ten shell casings, no arrests have been made as of Sunday afternoon. The police have requested that any individuals with relevant cell phone footage or information about the incident contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers.
One victim remains hospitalized, and their condition is currently unknown. Residents of the Lux Apartments described the terrifying ordeal, with one witness recalling hearing multiple gunshots and watching a victim collapse on the street.
The issue of security at the Lux Apartments has come under scrutiny, with online reviews and eyewitness accounts pointing out security lapses and unmonitored rooftop parties organized by non-residents. Both residents and visitors have expressed concerns about unauthorized access to the building.
This shooting marks the second incident of gun violence in Madison within a span of 48 hours. A 27-year-old man was fatally shot outside a business on Williamson Street early Friday morning, and no arrests have been made in connection with that case.
Madison Police Department plans to provide further updates online at 4 p.m. on Sunday and has scheduled a press conference for Monday morning at 9 a.m. As this is an ongoing investigation, more information is expected to emerge in the coming days.
