In a heartfelt open letter addressed to the parents and families affected by the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, Marcee Gray, the mother of 14-year-old Colt Gray, has extended her deepest apologies while maintaining that her son "is not a monster." The letter comes as questions arise about the steps taken to prevent the shooting after it was revealed that Marcee Gray had called the school prior to the attack to report an "extreme emergency."

Authorities have alleged that Colt Gray carried out the shooting, resulting in the deaths of two teachers and two students, with seven others wounded and additional injuries reported. Colt Gray is facing four counts of felony murder and will be tried as an adult.

Expressing profound remorse, Marcee Gray wrote in her letter, "If I could take the place of Mason and Christian, I would without a second thought," referring to the two 14-year-olds who tragically lost their lives in the shooting. She added, "I feel all of your pain and devastation. I grieve and cry with you."

Marcee Gray also acknowledged the sacrifice made by the two teachers who lost their lives, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. She expressed her heartfelt sympathy, stating that her "heart breaks for the 2 teachers who gave their lives while in the service of teaching and protecting our children."

In her emotional letter, Marcee Gray confessed, "We are all in a living nightmare right now, and I will personally never forgive myself for what has happened." She appealed for prayers for her son and their family, asserting that Colt Gray is not a monster but rather a quiet, thoughtful, caring, funny, and highly intelligent individual.

CNN is currently seeking comments from the families of the victims regarding Marcee Gray's letter. It was revealed that Marcee Gray had received a text from her son on the morning of the shooting, saying, "I'm sorry, mom." Concerned, she immediately called the school to inform them about an "extreme emergency," approximately 30 minutes before the police responded to the shooting incident.

Marcee Gray's father, Charles Polhamus, disclosed that she had a conversation with a school counselor about the situation for around 10 minutes. However, Marcee Gray questioned the response time, stating in a text message to her sister, "I don't understand what took them so long."

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith has stated that there were no prior warnings of a possible threat, but one of the victims' families believes that the shooting could have been prevented. Lisette Angulo, sister of Christian Angulo, asserted, "We believe it was preventable - 100%. They knew of the situation beforehand and didn't take proper action to prevent this tragedy from happening."

In another development, the suspect's father, Colin Gray, 54, has been charged with knowingly providing his son with a weapon. He is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, and cruelty to children.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as information becomes available. CNN's Isabel Rosales reported from Atlanta, while Dakin Andone reported and wrote this story in New York.
