In a recent Morning Consult poll conducted between Sept. 9 and 18, U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, a moderate North Texas Democrat, has taken a slight lead over incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz. The poll indicates that Allred is ahead of Cruz with likely voters by a narrow margin of 45% to 44%. Although Allred's lead falls within the margin of error, this marks the first time in their highly contested campaign that Cruz is trailing behind his challenger.
Sen. Ted Cruz, who is seeking a third term in the Senate, faced a tough challenge in the 2018 race against former Congressman Beto O'Rourke. This time around, Cruz is encountering strong opposition from Democratic groups, who see his seat as a potential target for flipping. Furthermore, Cruz's recent actions, such as traveling to Cancun during Winter Storm Uri while Texans faced severe consequences, have led to increased scrutiny and criticism.
Despite holding consistent leads in previous polls, Cruz has struggled to surpass the 50% margin, which could be concerning for an incumbent so close to the election. The latest poll results have energized Allred's campaign, with the Congressman expressing excitement and determination to secure victory. Allred took to Twitter, stating, "For the first time in this race, a new poll has us leading Ted Cruz by 1 point. I don't know about y'all but I'm fired up and ready to WIN!"
As the race intensifies, both candidates have agreed to participate in their first televised debate, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 15. The debate will take place at the studio of Dallas' WFAA-TV and will be broadcast on various platforms statewide. With the election just 47 days away, the debate is expected to provide voters with valuable insights into the contrasting visions and policies of the two Senate candidates.
