The jury ruled that McGregor must pay nearly 250,000 euros, equivalent to about $257,000, in damages to the woman, identified as Nikita Hand.
The allegations against McGregor date back to the early hours of December 9, 2018. Following an exchange of Instagram messages, a driver collected Hand and a colleague from a holiday party and drove them to the Beacon Hotel in Dublin. According to the lawsuit, once in the penthouse suite, McGregor initiated non-consensual activities by kissing Hand, removing her clothes, and putting her in a chokehold when she tried to resist. Following this, McGregor raped her, the lawsuit stated. Hand also accused another man, James Lawrence, of sexually assaulting her in the same suite, although the jury found Lawrence not liable for assault.
After the incident, Hand's mother called an ambulance, and Hand was later examined at a sexual assault treatment unit in a hospital. Medical professionals noted she had significant bruising on her limbs and other body parts. A month later, Hand reported the rape to the police, resulting in McGregor being arrested, questioned, and subsequently released. Ultimately, prosecutors decided not to bring criminal charges against McGregor.
Hand's lawsuit was filed in 2021, although McGregor referred to the allegations as "old news," asserting he had already been cleared of any wrongdoing by authorities. The civil court's recent verdict, however, has reignited public scrutiny and may prompt prosecutors to reassess the case.
Throughout the trial, McGregor's defense maintained that any sexual interaction between him and Hand was consensual. His lawyer argued that video footage showed Hand appearing "happy" as she left the hotel. Nonetheless, the jury sided with Hand.
This verdict represents another instance in a series of legal troubles for McGregor, who has faced various charges both in Europe and the United States over the past few years. Despite the ongoing support from some fans, others have grown weary of his controversial behavior.
