Jones County, Miss. - The Jones County Sheriff's Department has positively identified the body found in the trunk of a vehicle on Monday as 32-year-old Samantha Elisabeth McCowan of Laurel.

According to the sheriff's department, there was no indication of foul play involved in McCowan's death, as determined by an autopsy conducted by the Mississippi Forensic Laboratory. Security camera footage obtained during the investigation also showed no signs of foul play.

McCowan's body was discovered at Louis Auto Sales, a local used car lot along MS-184 and Victory Road. Initially, law enforcement had not identified the remains, but Sheriff Joe Berlin stated that there was a possibility the body could be connected to McCowan.

McCowan had been reported missing in the Jones County area after she walked away from a vehicle accident on Friday, June 7, near Mississippi Highway 184 and U.S. Highway 84. The single-vehicle crash occurred on Victory Road.

In the days between her disappearance and the discovery of her body, the Jones County Sheriff's Department, along with assistance from other agencies, conducted an extensive ground and drone search throughout the area.

McCowan's obituary has now been posted on the Freeman Funeral Home Waynesboro Chapel website, marking the end of a tragic chapter for her family and loved ones.

The Jones County Sheriff's Department expressed gratitude to all emergency services and agencies that provided assistance during the investigation.

With no evidence of foul play, the case surrounding Samantha Elisabeth McCowan's death will continue to be closely examined by authorities as they strive to provide answers and closure to her family and the community she called home.
