In a recent announcement, Microsoft has alerted Windows 11 users about taskbar crashes and glitches triggered by the May 2024 non-security preview update. Released on Thursday as the KB5037853 optional update, it aimed to fix multiple File Explorer problems and 32 other issues.

Shortly after the update was rolled out, Microsoft acknowledged a new known issue in the KB5037853 support document. The company confirmed that users of Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 may experience taskbar-related problems. These issues include temporary taskbar glitches, unresponsiveness, automatic disappearance, and reappearance.

To identify the problem, the Event Viewer might display an Application Error with 'Event ID 1000' under Windows Logs, listing 'Explorer.EXE' as the faulting application and 'Taskbar.View.dll' as the faulting module.

In addition to the Windows 11 update, Microsoft also released the optional KB5037849 Preview cumulative update for Windows 10 22H2. However, this update comes with four known issues. Two of the long-standing problems involve Copilot causing icons to jump between displays and not offering support when using a vertical taskbar.

The other two issues are related to Microsoft Connected Cache (MCC) node discovery, which fails when using DHCP Option 235, and Windows users encountering 0x80070520 errors when attempting to change their account profile pictures.

Microsoft has already taken steps to address the taskbar crashes triggered by the May 2024 Windows 11 preview update by utilizing the Known Issue Rollback (KIR) mechanism. This rollback aims to undo the faulty non-security updates delivered through Windows Update. The fix is expected to automatically propagate to consumer and non-managed business devices within 24 hours. Users can expedite the deployment by simply restarting their Windows devices.

For Windows enterprise-managed devices impacted by this known issue, Windows administrators need to install and configure the KIR Group Policy. The policy can be downloaded from a provided link and can be found under Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows 11 22H2 KB5037853 240505_142035 Known Issue Rollback. Deploying the Known Issue Rollback involves accessing the Domain policy or the Local Computer Policy on a domain controller via the Group Policy Editor. Specific Windows versions can be targeted for the rollback.

Microsoft has offered detailed guidance on deploying and configuring KIR Group Policies on their support website.

It is important for Windows 11 and Windows 10 users to stay informed about these known issues and follow the recommended steps provided by Microsoft to mitigate any potential disruptions caused by the recent updates.
