In a surprising turn of events, Michael Chandler took a shot at Conor McGregor after the Irish fighter was seen supporting a Bellator product at a recent event. Chandler, who was supposed to face McGregor in his highly anticipated comeback fight, couldn't resist pointing out the irony of the situation.
The incident occurred during the Bellator Champions Series event in Dublin, where McGregor cornered his Irish teammate, Sinead Kavanagh, in her submission loss to Arlene Blencowe. This event took place at the 3Arena, the same venue where a ticketed press conference between Chandler and McGregor was scheduled for June 3rd.
However, just 12 hours before the press conference, it was abruptly canceled, and it was later revealed that McGregor had withdrawn from the fight due to a toe injury. This left Chandler feeling the need to comment on McGregor's presence at the Bellator event, especially considering McGregor's previous mockery of Chandler for being a former Bellator champion.
Taking to social media, Chandler wrote, "Speaking of showing up to events...glad you finally made it to the 3Arena where the press conference was supposed to be June 3rd. Sweet slippers. Who's the Bellator Tick now? @TheNotoriousMMA"
McGregor, on the other hand, had recently stated that he needed a few weeks to recover from his injury and mentioned a potential return in August or September. However, he also made it clear that his comeback fight may or may not be against Chandler.
The rivalry between McGregor and Chandler has been brewing ever since they signed on to film Season 31 of "The Ultimate Fighter" back in early 2023. Chandler has been patiently waiting for the McGregor fight for almost two years, while McGregor has been seen attending various live events held by the UFC's combat sports competition.
Following Kavanagh's loss to Blencowe, McGregor sat cageside, sipping on his Forged Irish Stout beer brand, alongside Bellator personnel, further adding fuel to the fire of speculation surrounding his future plans.
With McGregor's attendance at the Bellator event, the anticipation for a potential showdown between him and Chandler continues to grow. Fans are eagerly awaiting McGregor's return to the octagon, whether it be against Chandler or another opponent.
Only time will tell when and against whom McGregor will make his comeback. But for now, the controversy surrounding his absence from the scheduled press conference, coupled with his appearance at the Bellator event, has certainly stirred up the MMA community.
