**Mexican President Refutes Trump's Border Closure Claims**
In a recent turn of events, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has publicly disputed President-elect Donald Trump's statements about an agreement to shut down the Mexico-U.S. border to curb migration. Trump's claims that Mexico would enforce these measures "immediately" were met with firm opposition from Sheinbaum.
Engaging with the public on social media, Sheinbaum made her standpoint clear through a post on X. She emphasized that Mexico's approach to handling migration is centered on human rights. "In our conversation with President Trump, I outlined Mexico's comprehensive strategy for managing the migration phenomenon, ensuring the respect for human rights. These efforts aim to support migrants and caravans before they reach the border," Sheinbaum stated.
Sheinbaum's comments were a direct response to Trump's previous post on Truth Social, where he described their dialogue as "wonderful", suggesting agreements on migration and drug issues. Contradicting Trump’s interpretation, Sheinbaum stressed that Mexico’s policy does not include closing borders but rather emphasizes cooperation between nations and communities.
This issue emerges at a notable time as Trump announced a forthcoming executive order targeting tariffs on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico. These tariffs are intended to press these countries to strengthen border security and combat the flow of fentanyl to the United States. In light of this, Sheinbaum has advocated for possible counter-tariffs, indicating a potential retaliatory stance that could impact both nations’ businesses.
Previously, Sheinbaum had written to Trump stating that threats and tariffs would not address the underlying migration and drug abuse problems in the U.S. She proposed collaborative approaches to tackle the fentanyl crisis. Warned by the specter of a trade war, she noted that tariffs might set off a retaliatory spiral, jeopardizing the operations of significant exporters like General Motors Co., Stellantis NV, and Ford Motor Co., out of Mexico.
The exchange between Sheinbaum and Trump underscores the complexity of migration and trade issues, revealing the stark differences in their proposed solutions and showcasing the potential ripple effects that international policies can trigger.
