### NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks Steps Down Earlier Than Planned Amid Corruption Probe

In an unexpected move, David C. Banks, the chancellor of New York City schools, will vacate his position on October 16. This announcement deviates from his previously stated plan to remain in office until the end of December. The decision was made public by City Hall on Wednesday.

His early departure comes amidst a widespread corruption investigation that has entangled Mayor Eric Adams and several members of his administration, including Banks' own relatives. The scandal has led to the indictment of Mayor Adams, implicating Banks' brothers—Philip Banks III and Terence Banks—and his wife, Sheena Wright, who serves as the first deputy mayor. In early September, federal agents seized phones from the Banks brothers and Ms. Wright as part of an inquiry centered on a consulting firm managed by Terence Banks.

The revelation of Banks' accelerated exit was closely followed by a statement from federal prosecutors indicating the possibility of additional charges against Mayor Adams and others involved in the scandal. At present, Chancellor Banks has not been charged with any crime and asserts his innocence, underscoring that he has not engaged in any wrongdoing.

In a statement released on Thursday, Mr. Banks expressed his willingness to stay in his role until December 31 to ensure a smooth and responsible transition for his staff. However, he acknowledged that the mayor had decided to hasten his departure. "My focus will be on supporting the incoming chancellor as she takes over and continues the great work we've started at New York City public schools," Banks noted, expressing his gratitude to the city's children and families whom he has served over the past 40 years.

Taking over the reins as the new chancellor will be Melissa Aviles-Ramos, a top deputy, who is set to assume her new role following Banks' departure.
