**Kamala Harris and Donald Trump Dominate Media Spotlight as Election Nears**
As the 2024 presidential election approaches its final weeks, both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are receiving significant attention from the public. According to The Breakthrough, a CNN polling project, Harris is in the spotlight for her recent series of high-profile interviews, while Trump draws notice for his large-scale campaign rallies.
A survey conducted by SSRS and Verasight, in collaboration with researchers from CNN, Georgetown University, and the University of Michigan between October 11-14, reveals that 69% of Americans reported hearing, reading, or seeing something about Harris in the previous week. Trump had a slightly higher figure at 73%. The results show that "campaigning" is the most mentioned topic for both candidates, making up 36% of responses concerning Harris and 28% concerning Trump, marking a significant increase for both since the beginning of the month.
For Harris, the term "interview" was most commonly associated with her, referencing her appearances on CBS' "60 Minutes," the podcast "Call Her Daddy," and interviews with Howard Stern and Stephen Colbert. These appearances varied broadly in audience demographics; for example, the average age of those citing "Call Her Daddy" was 32, while it was 52 for "60 Minutes." One respondent highlighted, "She is doing the media blitz everyone wanted."
Conversely, the term "rally" was frequently used in relation to Trump, with mentions of events in cities such as Aurora, Colorado, and Coachella, California, along with an upcoming event at New York City's Madison Square Garden. A respondent following Trump on Instagram noted his regular posts about these rallies.
A notable event in Detroit was also highlighted, where Trump described the city as a "developing area" and warned that the entire country could face similar issues if Harris wins the presidency. Following Hurricane Milton's landfall in Florida, "hurricane" emerged as a significant term used in discussions about both candidates, with Republicans and Democrats focusing on different aspects of Trump's response.
For the fifth straight week, "lie" was among the top words used in relation to Trump, now topping the list. Some respondents expressed strong reactions, such as, "All he does is LIE!" While "lie" also appeared in discussions about Harris, it wasn't as consistent or prominent. Some respondents mentioned her in the context of being lied about rather than lying herself.
Overall, the sentiment around Harris was found to be somewhat more positive than for Trump, though the margin was smaller compared to earlier periods following significant Democratic events like the Democratic National Convention and the ABC presidential debate.
