Massive Sinkhole Swallows Part of Soccer Field in Alton Park

A park in Alton, Illinois, faced an unexpected and surreal event on Wednesday morning when a massive sinkhole opened up, devouring part of its soccer field. The incident, captured on security footage obtained by CBS affiliate KMOV, showed the horrifying moment a stadium light sank into the ground, as plumes of debris rose into the air.

Michael Haynes, the director of Alton's parks and recreation department, described the scene as surreal, likening it to a movie where the ground suddenly collapses beneath you. The sinkhole, estimated to be at least 30 feet deep and 100 feet wide, was also captured on video by 618 Drone Service.

According to Haynes, the collapse is believed to be linked to the presence of an underground mine. Alton has a history of mining activity, which has persisted for decades. However, this is the first time such an incident has occurred, making it an anomaly that will require a thorough investigation.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the sinkhole incident. The affected area, where the collapse took place, was outfitted with turf fields in 2019, costing over $1 million. Haynes expressed confidence that the city would not bear the financial burden of repairs, as the investigation unfolds.

In response to the incident, all scheduled events at Gordon Moore Park have been canceled, and the park itself has been closed for the duration of the sinkhole investigation, announced Alton Parks and Recreation on social media. The New Frontier Materials company, responsible for the impacted area, has taken measures to secure the site. Inspectors and experts will assess the mine and conduct necessary repairs.

CBS News has reached out to both the New Frontier Materials company and the city of Alton for additional information on the incident and any future plans to address the situation. As the investigation continues, residents are left awestruck by the gaping sinkhole that has temporarily disrupted the tranquility of the park.
