The fire broke out on Monday afternoon at a six-story affordable housing building under construction along Middlefield Road.
According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, the fire began on the 5th floor of the building around 10:15 a.m. Strong winds gusting at 30 mph in the area have further fueled the flames, making it challenging for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
Residents in the vicinity of Pacific Ave., Calvin Ave., and Dumbarton Ave. have been instructed to leave their homes as a precautionary measure. Additionally, students at Garfield School were dismissed early to ensure their safety. The school authorities have assured parents that all students are secure and supervised, either at school or until their arrival.
The impact of the fire is not limited to residents and students alone; even the County Health's Fair Oaks Health Center has been evacuated. Hospital officials are working diligently to reschedule appointments for their patients.
Approximately 50 people from the adjacent area have also been evacuated due to the fire's proximity, while others have been relocated due to flying embers. Emergency services and the Department of Emergency Management are working together to find suitable accommodations for the evacuees.
The building that caught fire was set to become the Middlefield Junction, an affordable housing project approved by San Mateo County officials. The project, offering 179 units ranging from one to three bedrooms, was also intended to include a child care center and community open space.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries thus far. However, authorities are urging the public to avoid the area for their own safety. Commuters using Caltrain should also anticipate delays due to the emergency situation.
As the situation develops, updates will be provided on this ongoing story.
