In a bid to challenge incumbent Democratic heavyweights, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch, Massachusetts Republicans are set to choose their candidates in state primaries on Tuesday.

Warren, seeking a third term, is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination. Meanwhile, the Republican field for Senate includes industrial engineer Bob Antonellis, Quincy City Council President Ian Cain, and attorney John Deaton. Deaton, with significant financial backing, has emerged as the frontrunner, having loaned $1 million to his campaign. As of the end of June, Deaton boasted a comfortable $975,000 in his campaign coffers, whereas Cain had around $22,000 left for his campaign expenses.

Warren's previous U.S. Senate bid in 2012 saw her defeat Republican incumbent Scott Brown in a competitive race. In the 2018 election, Warren secured over 60% of the vote. Additionally, during the 2020 presidential race, Massachusetts voted overwhelmingly for President Joe Biden, who secured 66% of the vote.

Over in the 8th Congressional District in eastern Massachusetts, Democratic U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch faces no primary challenge in his pursuit of a 12th full term. On the Republican side, the candidates vying for the nomination are videographer Rob Burke, health care worker and retired Verizon employee Jim Govatsos, and bar owner Daniel Kelly. While Lynch had approximately $1.1 million in campaign funds as of the end of June, none of his Republican challengers have reported any funds raised thus far.

In the 2022 general election, Burke previously challenged Lynch and garnered 30% of the vote, while Lynch received a resounding 70%. The district, encompassing the Boston area, heavily favored Biden in the 2020 election, with the President securing 67% of the vote.

As Massachusetts Republicans gear up for the state primaries, all eyes will be on the candidates seeking to challenge the re-election bids of Elizabeth Warren and Stephen Lynch. With notable financial support, John Deaton appears poised to be a strong contender, while the Republican roster for the 8th Congressional District lacks heavyweight fundraising so far. Only time will tell who will emerge as the ultimate Republican challengers for these prominent Democratic incumbents.
