In a shocking turn of events, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, a 36-year-old resident of Catonsville, Maryland, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to damage or destroy electrical facilities in the state. Clendaniel, who is said to have espoused a white supremacist ideology, formed a connection with Brandon C. Russell, a Florida resident facing similar charges.

According to court documents, Clendaniel and Russell embraced the concept of "accelerationism," a belief that violent action is necessary to bring about the collapse of the current political system. From December 2022 to February 2023, the duo conspired to cause significant interruptions and impairments to the Baltimore regional power grid by targeting energy facilities involved in the transmission and distribution of electricity.

As part of her guilty plea, Clendaniel admitted to communicating and planning these attacks through encrypted communication applications (ECA). Their plans were eventually shared with a confidential human source (CHS-1), who was involved in discussions regarding a planned substation attack. Clendaniel, using the alias "Nythra88," expressed her support for the attack and confirmed her involvement.

In subsequent conversations with CHS-1, Clendaniel revealed that she lived near Baltimore and had a felonious past, having previously attempted to obtain a rifle. She requested CHS-1 to purchase a rifle for her, stating her desire to "accomplish something worthwhile." Clendaniel also provided potential target locations and engaged in discussions about the desired firearm specifications.

On January 29, 2023, Clendaniel named the five substations they planned to target, including Norrisville, Reisterstown, Perry Hall, and two substations near Baltimore City. She emphasized the destructive impact that hitting multiple substations simultaneously would have, expressing intentions to permanently lay waste to the city.

Law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at Clendaniel's residence on February 3, 2023, where they found various firearms and ammunition in her bedroom. Federal law prohibits Clendaniel from possessing these items due to her prior felony convictions for robbery in 2006 and robbery and attempted robbery in 2016.

Clendaniel has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and felony possession charges. She could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for conspiracy and 15 years for felony possession, followed by lifetime supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for September 3.

It is a chilling reminder of the threats posed by extremist ideologies and the need for continued vigilance to ensure public safety.
