### Manhattan DA Agrees to Delay Trump Sentencing Amid Legal Battles

In a significant development, the Manhattan district attorney’s office announced that it would agree to a postponement of former President Donald Trump’s sentencing in his hush money case. The decision aims to allow prosecutors sufficient time to address Trump’s anticipated motion to dismiss the case. In a letter addressed to Judge Juan Merchan, the DA’s office noted that Trump's sentencing is unlikely to occur "until after the end of Defendant's upcoming presidential term," affirming that Trump’s felony conviction should still stand.

A source closely linked to the DA's office indicated that they are amenable to a four-year suspension of the case. This latest move marks a dramatic shift in Trump’s legal and political circumstances. Just a year ago, Trump was contending with four separate indictments. As he now gears up to potentially re-enter the White House, his legal team's strategy to delay his cases beyond the 2024 election has been notably effective. The two federal cases are nearing closure, the Georgia state case remains inactive, and the New York case seems poised for an indefinite suspension without a final sentence.

Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to payments made to Michael Cohen, his then-lawyer, reimbursing Cohen for a $130,000 payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels intended to silence her about an alleged affair before the 2016 election. Trump has consistently denied the affair. In their correspondence to Judge Merchan, the Manhattan DA argued against dismissing Trump’s conviction, highlighting that no law mandates the dismissal of a post-trial criminal proceeding initiated when the defendant was not immune from prosecution and which is based on conduct for which there is no immunity.

Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, claimed this legal filing as a "total and definitive victory for President Trump." Originally, Merchan was scheduled to decide last week on whether to overturn Trump’s conviction based on the US Supreme Court’s recent decision, which granted Trump broad immunity for official acts during his presidency.

Recognizing the "unprecedented circumstances" of Trump’s potential reelection, Merchan postponed his ruling. Trump's legal team has pushed for the conviction to be annulled, citing both the presidential immunity decision and his impending return to the White House. Emil Bove, part of Trump’s legal team, emphasized that pausing and dismissing the case is crucial to prevent any unconstitutional barriers to Trump’s governance.

Prominent legal analyst and former prosecutor Elie Honig remarked that the sentencing delay was an expected result of Trump’s election. Honig pointed out the contradiction in the principle that no person is above the law, noting that the president enjoys significant immunity due to legal precedents and Department of Justice policies barring prosecution of a sitting president.

Indicted by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg in the spring of last year, Trump’s case in New York became the only one among four indictments to proceed to trial. Trump was found guilty on all 34 felony counts by a Manhattan jury after a two-month trial. Initially set for July, Trump's sentencing faced multiple delays following the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling, compelling his lawyers to seek dismissal of the conviction and further postponements of related court proceedings.

The Manhattan DA's office maintains that Trump’s conviction is justified and that the trial evidence was compelling. This story reflects the ongoing complexity and unprecedented nature of Donald Trump’s legal battles as he continues to navigate the implications of his potential return to the presidency.
