A man sustained life-threatening injuries after being shot during a small pro-Israel demonstration in Newton, Massachusetts on Thursday evening, according to authorities. Scott Hayes, 47, was arrested at the scene and is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as violation of a constitutional right causing injury. The incident occurred when the injured man, who remains unidentified, crossed the street to engage in a verbal exchange with the protesters before reportedly jumping on one of them, leading to the shooting.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan provided details of the incident during a news conference on Thursday. Eyewitness reports cited by Ryan indicated that the man who was shot had no affiliation with the protest and instigated the physical confrontation. The Newton Police Department responded to calls about the incident at approximately 6:40 p.m.
Newton Police Chief George McMains urged anyone with pictures, videos, or information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. As a precautionary measure, the police department will be deploying additional patrol officers to Jewish places of worship in the area for the next few days.
Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, speaking during the news conference, described the incident as frightening and called on residents to allow the police to conduct their investigation while remaining calm. The identity of the man who was shot has not yet been made public.
Hayes was scheduled to appear in Newton District Court on Friday morning for his arraignment, although the time has been delayed according to a court spokesperson. It remains unclear whether Hayes is the individual who was jumped on during the altercation.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the need to approach discussions and disagreements in a peaceful and non-violent manner. Authorities are continuing their efforts to gather more evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
