**Man Sentenced to Life for Hammer Attack on Pelosi's Husband**

In San Francisco, a man who violently assaulted Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Superior Court Judge Harry Dorfman delivered the sentence to David Wayne DePape on Tuesday, following DePape's conviction in June for aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and false imprisonment of an elder. At the time of the attack in October 2022, Paul Pelosi was 82 years old.

The aggressive break-in and assault left Paul Pelosi bleeding and unconscious. DePape had invaded the Pelosi home armed with zip ties and a hammer, shouting "Where’s Nancy?", echoing the infamous chants of the January 6 Capitol rioters. Nancy Pelosi was not at home during the intrusion.

In their response to the sentencing, the Pelosi family expressed their relief that legal justice had been served. They highlighted their admiration for Paul Pelosi’s bravery during the attack and his resilience throughout his recovery and the trials. "Not a day goes by that we do not think of this devastating assault, its trauma - or the possibility of future attacks," stated the family.

This recent sentencing is the second for DePape in connection with the attack. U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Corley had previously handed him a separate 30-year prison sentence following his federal conviction in November 2023 for attempting to kidnap a federal official and assaulting an immediate family member of a federal official.

At the trial, DePape’s defense argued for shorter sentences, citing his troubled personal life, which they claimed was marred by abuse and radicalized by extreme media influences. Despite knowing the home's security cameras would likely catch him, DePape was surprised to find Paul Pelosi still asleep after he broke the glass door to enter the house.

The attack, which occurred while Pelosi was sleeping in a pajama top and boxer shorts, escalated after Pelosi managed to call the police. When officers arrived, DePape struck Pelosi on the head with the hammer, rendering him unconscious. Responding officers quickly subdued DePape and disarmed him.

Paul Pelosi, in his statement to Judge Dorfman, detailed the ongoing physical and psychological impacts from the assault. He continues to suffer from severe pain, dizziness, and sensitivity to light and noise, and has permanent physical damage, including lumps on his head and a metal plate in his skull. Pelosi emphasized the need for the harshest penalty possible for DePape, describing the severe and lasting impact of the attack on his life.
