### Man Charged with Murder in Rochester Hills Home Invasion, Awaiting Extradition
In a pivotal development, a suspect connected to the killing of a Rochester Hills man has been charged with murder and awaits extradition from Louisiana, as per the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, from Dearborn, faced arrest on Saturday in Louisiana and is charged with felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment, according to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.
Prosecutor McDonald stated, "This was a gruesome attack on an elderly couple in their home." She further noted, "I have authorized the highest charge, which carries a mandatory life without parole sentence for this brutal crime. My office will work diligently to ensure that this individual is held accountable and that the public is safe from violent predators." Unlawful imprisonment carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years and/or a fine up to $20,000.
Hernandez is one of two suspects accused of killing 72-year-old Hussein Murray in the latter's home on Friday. Murray's wife, also 72 and unnamed, was present during the invasion and later briefly hospitalized and released. Hernandez was apprehended without incident at approximately 4 p.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana, after local deputies spotted a vehicle matching the description of Hernandez's vehicle on Interstate 49. He was held on multiple armed robbery warrants from Ohio, alongside the Oakland County murder warrant, and is currently detained at the Caddo Correction Center.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard commented, "This case is an extremely disturbing and tragic event for which we intend to hold the perpetrators fully accountable." He added, "I am so proud of our whole team and how they worked around the clock to bring this case forward. I am also very proud of our partnership with the U.S. Marshal's Service as well as the local sheriff's office that was watching for our suspect vehicle. We continue to ask the public's help for information on locating the second suspect."
The murder took place shortly before noon in an upscale neighborhood on Newcastle block. According to the Sheriff's Office, Hernandez and an accomplice pretended to be DTE employees, driving a white pickup truck marked with a DTE identifier. The suspects, one described as a "thin Black man," initially visited the couple's home on Thursday night, claiming a gas leak but were denied entry. On Friday, they were allowed inside under the same pretext. Murray's wife told deputies the men had returned, and her husband went with them to the basement to inspect the supposed gas leak.
After contacting 911, Murray's wife, who had been tied up with her hands duct-taped, initially suspected her husband had been kidnapped. Deputies discovered Murray's deceased body in the basement during their search.
The investigation is ongoing, with details about the second suspect yet to be disclosed.
