In a significant turn of events, David DePape, the individual found guilty of assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer, has been resentenced to 30 years in prison after a federal judge expressed remorse for not allowing him to speak during his first sentencing hearing. The decision was made on Tuesday in a district court in San Francisco.

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley admitted to her mistake of not providing DePape with an opportunity to make a statement, which is required by law. Expressing her sincere apologies, she conveyed her regret to DePape and his attorneys. The 44-year-old DePape broke down while reading a prepared statement, expressing sorrow for hurting Mr. Pelosi. He mentioned that he should have left when he realized Nancy Pelosi was not present on the night of the attack that occurred at their San Francisco residence in October 2022. DePape also acknowledged that, in retrospect, he was not in a good state of mind.

Consequently, DePape was resentenced to 30 years in prison. U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey previously asserted that the sentence reflects DePape's lack of remorse and contrition for viciously assaulting Mr. Pelosi. The Pelosi family, in response to the initial sentence, released a brief statement expressing pride in Paul Pelosi's courage for saving himself during the attack and for testifying in the case. They also expressed gratitude for the support and well-wishes received during Mr. Pelosi's ongoing recovery.

DePape was originally convicted last year of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. Prosecutors had sought a 40-year prison term. Paul Pelosi, in a victim impact statement, attested that his life has been irreversibly altered since the attack.

During the trial, DePape admitted to breaking into the Pelosi home with the intention of holding the then-Speaker hostage and causing harm if she lied to him. He further confessed to using a hammer to assault Paul Pelosi after law enforcement arrived, citing his frustration with what he perceived as government corruption unraveling.

This resentencing serves as a reminder of the gravity of the attack on Paul Pelosi and the subsequent legal proceedings surrounding it. The court's acknowledgment of its error and the delivery of a revised sentence provide closure in this arduous chapter.
