According to a recent Yahoo News/YouGov poll, a majority of Americans consider the charges against former President Trump in his New York hush money case to be "serious." The survey revealed that 57 percent of Americans agree that falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to a porn star is a serious crime, marking a record high in public perception.

The trial, which began on Monday, is significant as it represents the first criminal trial of an American president. Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to reimbursements made to his former attorney, Michael Cohen. Cohen had paid $130,000 to an adult film actor prior to the 2016 election to maintain secrecy about an alleged affair with Trump, which the former president has denied.

After the second day of jury selection, Trump expressed his view that the reimbursements were classified as a "legal expense," shifting some responsibility onto his accountants. He questioned, "I was paying a lawyer, and we marked it down as a legal expense - some accountant. I didn't know. Mark it down as a legal expense. That's exactly what it was. And you get indicted over that?"

The poll also delved into public opinion regarding Trump's potential future in politics. Interestingly, 57 percent of Americans stated that if Trump is convicted of a serious crime in the coming months, he should not be allowed to serve as president again in the future. In contrast, only 29 percent believed he should be permitted to reenter the White House if convicted, while 14 percent expressed uncertainty on the matter.

It is worth noting that Trump is also facing three other criminal cases, two on the federal level and one in Georgia. However, the hush money case in New York is the first to proceed to trial.

The Yahoo News/YouGov poll, conducted from April 11 to 15, surveyed a sample of 1,746 adults. The poll carries a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points, providing valuable insights into public sentiment regarding Trump's hush money case and its potential impact on his political future.
