**Macron's Arms Embargo Comments on Israel Draw Netanyahu's Ire**
French President Emmanuel Macron's call for halting arms shipments to Israel amid the Gaza conflict has sparked a sharp rebuke from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The exchange underscores deepening tensions between Israel and some Western nations over the ongoing crisis.
During the opening session of the 19th Summit of the Francophonie in Paris on October 5, 2024, Macron emphasized the need for a political solution and stated that the use of arms in Gaza should be halted. He specifically mentioned that France does not ship weapons to the conflict zone, highlighting the priority to avert further escalation, particularly in Lebanon, to prevent it from becoming another Gaza.
In response, Netanyahu condemned Macron and other Western leaders advocating an arms embargo on Israel. In a pre-recorded video released by his office, Netanyahu labeled the call "a disgrace" and asserted Israel's determination to prevail in the conflict "with or without their support."
France's defense ministry reported that it shipped military equipment worth €30 million ($33 million) to Israel last year, illustrating that France is not a major weapons supplier to the country. Nonetheless, Macron's comments signify a push for a broader diplomatic approach to the Gaza conflict.
Adding to the diplomatic efforts, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot is currently on a four-day trip to the Middle East, set to conclude on Monday in Israel. The trip is part of Paris's broader initiative to revive political dialogue and negotiations in the region.
