In response to the approaching Tropical Storm Debby, several local schools in the Savannah area have made the decision to postpone the start of the academic year. As a precautionary measure, schools in Appling County, Bacon County, Bryan County, and Liberty County will be closed for both students and staff on Monday, August 5th and Tuesday, August 6th.

The Appling County School System and Bacon County Schools have announced that classes will be suspended for these two days. Meanwhile, Bryan County Schools will remain closed on Monday, August 5th, including all sporting events and afterschool activities. Officials at Bryan County Schools will monitor the storm closely and decide by 1 p.m. on Monday whether it would be safe to resume classes on Tuesday.

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will have an early dismissal on Monday, August 5th, followed by a closure on Tuesday, August 6th, and Wednesday, August 7th. This decision has been made to ensure the safety of the students, staff, and faculty members.

First Christian Academy in Richmond Hill will also remain closed on Monday, August 5th.

Superintendent David Edwards of Long County Schools has emphasized the potential impact of the storm, specifically heavy rainfall, prompting the postponement of the first day of school until Thursday, August 8th. It is important to note that further delays may occur depending on the condition of roads, power outages, and property damage. Additionally, all Long County school and district offices will be closed through Wednesday, August 7th.

To keep everyone updated, officials have confirmed that any necessary changes to the schedule will be communicated through the usual channels. The Children's Village in Richmond Hill will likewise be closed on Monday, August 5th.

As the situation continues to evolve, WTOC will provide timely updates on the status of school closures and any additional information regarding the impact of Tropical Storm Debby on local educational institutions.
