House Speaker Mike Johnson praised former President Trump's unwavering demeanor after the second apparent assassination attempt against him, emphasizing Trump's resilience and the need for increased protection. Johnson, who spent three hours with Trump at Mar-a-Lago following the recent incident, highlighted the relentless attacks the former president has faced. Despite Trump's strong composure, Johnson deemed it unacceptable that adequate protection had not been provided as needed.

In response to the threats against Trump, bipartisan legislation was unanimously passed by the House to expand security measures for the former president. The bill, led by Reps. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) and Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), would mandate a level of protection for Trump equivalent to that of a sitting president. Johnson commended Lawler for introducing the bill and acknowledged the urgent necessity for enhanced security, especially in light of the recent assassination attempts targeting Trump.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) proposed a similar bill in the Senate, extending the protective measures to presidential candidates, their running mates, and spouses. The legislation stipulates that the Secret Service should implement any necessary security measures to safeguard the individuals listed. The initiatives come in the wake of the most recent incident where an alleged gunman, Ryan Wesley Routh, aimed a rifle at Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Despite the assailant fleeing the scene, he was later apprehended and charged with gun-related crimes.

The events unfolding mark the second known assassination attempt against Trump, with the previous incident occurring during a rally in Butler, Pa. In that instance, a gunman wounded Trump's ear with a bullet, resulting in fatalities and injuries among rally attendees. As the legislative proposals move forward, the focus remains on fortifying security protocols to shield public figures, including former President Trump, from such perilous threats.
