**Harvey Weinstein's Lawyers File Legal Claim Against NYC Over Jail Conditions**

Harvey Weinstein's legal team has taken action against New York City, claiming the disgraced Hollywood producer is enduring inadequate medical care and unsanitary living conditions at the Rikers Island jail. The notice of claim, an essential step before a lawsuit, criticizes the city's negligence in providing Weinstein with proper medical attention and basic needs such as clean clothes and a hygienic environment.

Weinstein's documented medical issues are numerous, including chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnea, obesity, and high blood pressure. The claim notes that he was hospitalized twice this year and underwent emergency heart surgery in September.

A representative for the New York City mayor's office responded, stating that the public hospital system collaborates with the Department of Correction to ensure all incarcerated individuals, including those with complex health requirements, receive quality medical care.

Imran H. Ansari, Weinstein's lawyer, issued a strong denunciation of the conditions at Rikers Island, comparing them to a "gulag where the prisoners are treated like animals." Ansari detailed his observations during a recent visit, noting that Weinstein's clothes had not been washed for weeks and he was not provided clean underwear, which exacerbates his susceptibility to illness.

According to Ansari, the conditions at Rikers Island for Weinstein amount to not only medical negligence but also cruel and unusual punishment, violating the Eighth Amendment. He emphasized that they intend to fight aggressively for Weinstein's rights to uphold the justice system's integrity and constitutional values. The legal team is seeking $5 million in damages.

Weinstein, 72, was returned to city custody earlier this year after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction by a 4-3 decision. Manhattan prosecutors are scheduled to retry the case in 2025. Weinstein maintains his innocence, pleading not guilty to the accusations. Notably, over 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, allegations that significantly advanced the #MeToo movement and highlighted the issue of sexual harassment and assault by powerful figures across various industries.
