Federal, state, and local law enforcement officials are gearing up for the Republican National Convention (RNC) set to begin in Milwaukee on Monday. A joint threat assessment, compiled by the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, the Milwaukee Police Department, and the Milwaukee Southeastern Wisconsin Threat Analysis Center, has been circulated to law enforcement agencies, urging increased vigilance.
According to a reliable law enforcement source cited by CBS News, the assessment did not identify any credible or specific threats. Nonetheless, there is a concern that the convention, along with the venues hosting pre-and post-celebration events, could be attractive targets for various types of perpetrators, including foreign terrorist organizations, homegrown violent extremists, domestic violent extremist groups, lone-wolf actors, and active shooters.
The assessment highlights the symbolic nature of the convention, coupled with its connection to the 2024 general election, as potential reasons for it being viewed as an attractive target. Consequently, law enforcement and security agencies are significantly enhancing their presence and allocating additional resources for the event.
Both the Republican and Democratic conventions are classified as high-priority gatherings by law enforcement and are comparable to well-known events such as the Super Bowl and presidential inaugurations. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated the RNC as a SEAR-1 (Significant Event Alert Rating) event, necessitating extensive interagency federal support. Joint threat assessments, like the one created for the RNC, are mandatory for SEAR-1 events.
As per the Milwaukee Police Department, at least two dozen states, along with the District of Columbia, are sending law enforcement officers to the convention. Additionally, officials have stated that more departments may be added to the list until the start of the convention. The U.S. Secret Service is spearheading the coordination for the upcoming events.
Republicans from across the nation will gather at Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum arena to formally nominate their presidential candidate. Former President Donald Trump's nomination, expected this week, is considered a formality as he secured the required 1,125 delegates back in March. However, Trump has yet to announce his choice for a running mate.
The convention is slated to commence on Monday and will run through Thursday. The official nomination of the presidential candidate and the announcement of the running mate are expected to take place on Monday afternoon. Although Milwaukee is known as a Democratic stronghold, hosting the convention in Wisconsin, a battleground state, enables the Republican Party to present its message directly to key voters.
