Late night talk show hosts Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers didn't hold back in their opening monologues as they took aim at former President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk over their recent interview on the revamped Twitter, now known as X.
The interview, which took place on X's Spaces platform, grabbed attention for all the wrong reasons. It started with significant technical difficulties, attributed by Musk to a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. Musk took to Twitter to inform users of the ongoing issue and expressed his determination to resolve it as quickly as possible.
After a delay of about 40 minutes, Trump and Musk finally began the interview, conducted on the very platform where both had previously gained fame and amassed a massive following. Trump, who had been banned from Twitter in 2021 following the Capitol insurrection on January 6, saw his account reinstated under Musk's ownership. Since then, he has tweeted eight times on X.
On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host humorously dubbed the interview as "a big night for weird old rich guys with no friends." Colbert didn't miss the opportunity to remind viewers about the reason for Trump's ban, stating that any activity by Trump on Twitter would only serve as a reminder of the "awful reason he was banned to begin with."
Colbert didn't spare Musk either, poking fun at the tech issues that caused the delay. He quipped, "I'm not waiting 40 minutes for anything unless it's for the bacon cheese fries from the Shake Shack at LaGuardia." Colbert highlighted that later reports from Twitter indicated that Musk's claim of a DDoS attack was most likely untrue, with a 99 percent chance that he was lying.
On Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host also took a mocking tone as he opened his monologue with a critique of the interview. Meyers played a clip of Trump discussing a supposed conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling out the inaccuracies and even suggesting that Trump's voice sounded strange, comparing it to a sugared-up kid on Halloween refusing to remove plastic vampire teeth.
Meyers further ridiculed a garbled answer from Trump during the interview, jokingly suggesting that artificial intelligence might have written that sentence. As the November election approaches, Musk, as the owner of the X platform, has been leveraging his political clout to weigh in on various topics, including candidates, racial violence in the U.K., and even picking a fight with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The interview between Trump and Musk on X's Spaces may have faced technical issues and drawn criticism from the late night talk show hosts, but it also serves as a reminder of the influence and impact that social media platforms can have on individuals and the political landscape alike.
